Estimating Variances for a Scanner-based Consumer Price Index

چکیده
This paper presents estimates of the sampling variance of price change for an experimental scannerbased Consumer Price Index for cereal for the New York Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area. Variances are presented for 1-, 2-, 6-, and 12-month price change lags, using a stratified jackknife methodology. In section one the official CPI and scanner-based geometric price index estimators are described. Section two presents the construction of jackknifed replicates and gives the sampling variance estimator for the scanner index series. Section three presents computational results and contrasts scanner variances with variance estimates for the published price index for cereal for the same area. Sources of price change variability are identified and discussed. Section four contrasts variance estimates in which missing prices are imputed independently for each jackknifed replicate with those in which this step is not taken. Conclusions are given in section five.

Price Index Estimation Using Price Imputation for Unsold Items
Although scanner price quotes and expenditures have great promise in improving the Consumer Price Index (CPI), their use has introduced new problems. One major problem confronting the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the treatment of an item that experiences no purchases during a particular time period. Either a price can be explicitly imputed for this item or it can be implicitly imputed by...
متن کاملEstimating Components of Variance of Price Change from a Scanner-Based Sample
Opinions expressed in this paper are those of the authors and do not constitute policy of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In this paper we present estimates of components of variance of price change for cereal for several publication areas. Components of variance for 1-, 6-, and 12-month lags were computed using a weighted restricted maximum likelihood estimation method. Estimates are contraste...
متن کاملSmoothing Variance Estimates for Price Indexes Over Time
This paper explores the possibility of developing generalized variances for price indexes by applying nonparametric scatterplot smoothers to time series of point variance estimates. The goal here is to formulate smoothed variances which are approximately unbiased, which provide acceptable confidence interval coverage, and which are more stable than the point variance estimates. Smoothing method...
متن کاملEstimation of quantitative characteristics considering CPI microdata in Iran
The aim of this study is to estimate the known statistical characteristics of nominal price stickiness in the Iranian economy during the years 1390 to 1399 and at different commodity levels of microdata of consumer price index (including product category, Coicop commodity group, and the whole economy) and thus the stickiness between categories and product groups are also compared. For this purp...
متن کاملMissing price and coupon availability data in scanner panels: Correcting for the self-selection bias in choice model parameters
Discrete choice models have been widely estimated on scanner panel data to study consumer choice. One challenge in scanner panel research is that only the prices of the items bought are recorded. The ad hoc models used to fill in the missing prices of non-purchased brands may create a self-selection bias in estimating consumer price sensitivities. This type of bias is also present in existing s...
